Frankincense: Gift of Kings

The next oil in the premium starter kit may be familiar to you, at least in name. It was one of the gifts given to the Christ Child, along with gold and myrrh, by the Magi. Its name comes from Medieval French for “real incense.” Frankincense has been used for healing purposes since ancient times. Indeed, it appears in one of the oldest known medical records, the Ebers Papyrus, dating from the 16th century B.C. Young Living’s oil is produced by steam-distilling resin from trees in Somalia.

When diffused, frankincense increases spiritual awareness, promotes meditation, improves attitude and uplifts spirits. When taken internally, frankincense supports your well-being and normal cell health.

Young Living gives these instructions for use:

Topical: Apply 2–4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed.

Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily.

Internally: Put 2 drops in a capsule. Take 3 times daily.

Copaiba: Favorite of Brazilian Healers

Let’s start out right: how do you pronounce the name of this oil? According to an automated voice on YouTube, it’s co-PAY-ba. I’ve been saying co-pah-EEE-bah (yes, three E’s), but then I have a Southern accent.

I’d never heard of this oil, unlike some of the others, but I’m a fan now. Copaiba is steam distilled from the gum resin of tapped Copaifera reticulata trees in Brazil.

Copaiba comes in two version, the goldish-brown and the white label. The white label signifies “Vitality,” meaning it is safe for ingestion. The regular label version is exactly the same, but the distinction serves as a reminder.

Speaking of ingestion, in Peruvian and Brazilian herbal medicine, copiaba is used as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic for the urinary tract system, and in treatment of urinary problems, stomach ulcers, syphilis, tetanus, bronchitis and tuberculosis. A popular home remedy in Brazil for sore throats and tonsillitis is a half teaspoon of copaiba resin added to warm water. (Essential Oils Desk Reference, 7th edition, p. 81.)

Young Living’s directions on copaiba are:

Topical: Apply 2-4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed. Aromatic: Diffuse up to 1 hour 3 times daily. Caution: Keep out of reach of children. For external use only. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use.

Ditch Your Air Fresheners

Dewdrop diffuser

Do you remember those obnoxious commercials for air freshener spray? Crotchety old women were depicted as coming into a younger woman’s home, saying things like, “Fried fish last night, dear?” and “I thought George gave up cigars.” Which, as an aside, I would not let people that snarky into my house, just sayin’. But this was supposed to freak you out and make you panic about how your house smells. (Just like deodorant commercials are designed to make you obsess about your armpits.)

I think we all bought into the idea that we had to spray a variety of chemicals in our house so nobody would come in and think we were horrible people. But did you know that recent research shows that air fresheners and other fragranced products cause adverse reactions? A 2015 article in Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health showed that “34.7 % of the population reported health problems, such as migraine headaches and respiratory difficulties, when exposed to fragranced products.” An article in the Journal of Toxicological Sciences recommended further research on the topic, as “deleterious effects do not manifest for many years, making it difficult to identify air freshener-associated symptoms.”

Rainstone diffuser

I’ve stopped using candles, incense and air freshener in favor of my diffuser. Not only do I have 2 Dewdrop diffusers, I also have the Rainstone, which has a remote control! These diffusers are called cold-air diffusers. They are designed to “atomize a microfine mist of essential oils into the air, where they can remain suspended for several hours.”* This atomizing of oils alters the structure of molecules that create the odors, rather than just masking them. Many essential oils, including Frankincense, Lavender and Orange, are effective in eliminating and destroying airborne germs and bacteria.

But you know what? I simply love the smell of diffused oils. One of our favorites I like to diffuse as we’re settling down to go to sleep at night is a combination of three drops each of Lavender and Copaiba, and two drops of Stress Away. This blend is a relaxing and soothing way to end the day.

What’s your favorite diffuser or diffuser oil combination? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

15 Days of Essentials

Are you ready to change your life?

Yeah, I know, lots of people ask that question. (And now I’m thinking of the light bulb joke: How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb? Only one, but the light bulb has to want to change.)

Seriously, what I’m about to talk about changed my life. But it wasn’t an overnight change. It’s been gradual and kinda snuck up on me.

I bought my Young Living starter kit in August of 2016. I was intrigued by the possibilities of essential oils, but still skeptical. It sounded too good to be true. I made jokes about “snake oil.” But I did enjoy playing alchemist, mixing up my own rollers (little bottles with roller fitments) and shampoo (not a huge success) and rug deodorizer (pretty good).

A year later, I’m totally into the oily lifestyle. In fact, I’m a distributor. No, no, don’t run away, please. This series is intended to help you learn more about the starter kit and what’s in it. If you want to purchase your own, great. If not, that’s fine; at least you’ll understand a bit about my obsession.

Young Living makes available several different kinds of starter kits, but we’ll focus on my favorite, the premium starter kit with the Dewdrop™ diffuser. When you purchase this kit for only $160, you get the following:
